David Liu – Son of Brian and Belinda Liu
David Liu is a sophomore on the UChicago men’s tennis team. He helped the No. 4-ranked Maroons compile a 3-1 record during their spring break trip to California against four nationally-ranked opponents. Liu was a perfect 4-0 in singles and 2-2 in doubles. The sophomore leads the team in wins with a singles record of 20-1 and a doubles mark of 19-5.
Head Coach Jay Tee: “David had an outstanding week for us in California, leading the team in victories over nationally-ranked opponents. David not only played great tennis, but did it in a style that we’ve been preaching over the past several months. He played the big points extremely well, attacked the weaker shots and displayed a fighting attitude throughout. I’m hopeful that Dave can build on this and that the rest of the team can use him as an example of how we want to compete as a team.”
Teammate Nicolas Chua: “Dave is one of those guys who you can count on every match. From last year to this year, he’s played many different positions in both singles and doubles, but has won almost every match at every spot. One example of this is last year in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, he clinched our match against the defending champions Amherst while cramping. Dave is as close as it gets to a lock for two points on our team, and we’re lucky to have him.”
